Research Reflecting the Success of
ETS and ELS Surgery Procedures

The Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy and Lumbar Sympathectomy procedures described on this website are backed by numerous peer reviewed surgical papers (listed below) proving the stated success rates and results.

Many doctors perform various hyperhidrosis procedures, but few have advanced the field of study like our surgeons, with Dr. Rafael Reisfeld pioneering new techniques, and both he and Dr. Eraj Basseri authoring important research papers as seen below. Our surgeons have dedicated their careers to the subject of hyperhidrosis and are currently known as authorities on the subject.

Hyperhidrosis – A Complete guide to Diagnosis and Management

Published (2018)

Medical and paramedical professionals, as well as students and researchers, interested in the topic will find the book comprehensive in scope and targeted in offering practical, clinical guidance. Diagnosis and Treatment of Hyperhidrosis – A Complete Guide counts with the collaboration of most renowned specialists of this field and is intended as an easy to read and very practical reference book. Dr. Reisfeld contributed to the two chapters in this book dealing with the surgical treatment of plantar hyperhidrosis. ELS or Endoscopic Lumbar Sympathectomy became the latest approach to those patients suffering from severe plantar hyperhidrosis which is resistant to medical therapy. This procedure demands extra skills and knowledge with regard to severe foot sweating. Basically, the book provides a very good overview for laymen and physicians alike. Recommended reading

The American Surgeon

Published (August 2013)

Dr. Reisfeld published another peer reviewed study in the American Surgeon Medical Journal about the treatment of severe plantar hyperhidrosis (Foot Sweating). Dr. Reisfeld is proud to be one of the few surgeons who has invested his time and effort to study and advance this subject. This study evaluated overall safety and efficacy of endoscopic lumbar sympathectomy (ELS) using a clamping method in a large series of consecutive patients.

Surgical Laparoscopy Endoscopy & Percutaneous Techniques

Published (August 2010)

Surgical treatment for focal plantar hyperhidrosis is not yet well studied. Bilateral endoscopic lumbar sympathectomy (ELS), using the clamping method, was performed in 63 patients with focal plantar hyperhidrosis. Clamps were placed at L3 (46.0%) or L4 (52.4%), with one case at L2. All patients had improvement in foot sweating, with 96.6% achieving total anhidrosis.

Thoracic Surgery Clinics

Published (May 2008)

This publication includes comprehensive, state-of-the-art reviews by experts in the field provide current, practical information on the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the lung, esophagus, chest wall, trachea, and pleura. A contributed peer reviewed chapter in this publication discussing the conservative treatment of Palmar (Hand Sweating) Hyperhidrosis was authored by our pioneer, Dr. Reisfeld. The need for a conservative trial to treat hyperhidrosis is the hallmark before any surgical treatment is attempted.

Clinical Autonomic Research Medical Journal

Published (September 2006)

This study evaluates the outcome of 1,274 patients who underwent endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy for palmar, plantar, axillary or facial hyperhidrosis/blushing. Half of the patients were clamped at the T2T3 level and half were clamped at the T3T4 level. Postsurgical symptoms and side effects were assessed by interview.

Azygos Lobe in Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy for Hyperhidrosis

Published (2005)

Paper published by describing relatively uncommon findings while performing endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy. The paper was peer reviewed and it described the anatomical entity and the surgical methods to deal with this abnormality.

Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy for Hyperhidrosis

Published (2002)

Dr. Reisfeld was published in the August 2002 issue of the Surgical Laparoscopy, Endoscopy & Percutaneous Techniques which is a peer reviewed (reviewed by other surgeons in the same field) surgical journal.
